Etched Outdoors was founded by Matt Ashwin following more than 30 years working within Sydney’s landscape industry, including senior leadership roles within larger landscape design and construction businesses. While those years provided invaluable experience managing complex projects and large teams, they also shaped Matt’s desire to create something more personal, considered, and client-focused.
In recent years, however, he made the conscious decision to move away from the high-volume nature of larger landscape businesses to create his desired client experience. Etched Outdoors was established with the intention of offering a more connected and caring approach — one where clients feel genuinely supported, clearly communicated with, and closely guided throughout every stage of the process.
Matt believes exceptional landscapes are created through the combination of thoughtful design, skilled craftsmanship, and a genuine understanding of each client’s lifestyle, vision, and priorities. By remaining boutique in scale and personally involved in every project, he is able to maintain a high level of communication, project oversight, and attention to detail from concept through to completion.
For Matt, nature is the defining element of any outdoor space — bringing calmness, reflection, and balance to daily life. Through Etched Outdoors, he continues to create bespoke residential landscapes that combine beauty, functionality, and enduring quality, while delivering a more approachable, collaborative, and personalised experience than traditional large-scale construction businesses often provide.
